10 Best Slasher Horror TV Shows
6. Scream
It’s rare for a TV series to get effectively rebooted in the middle of its run, but it's even rarer for this change to actually succeed.
Debuting in 2015, MTV’s Scream originally sought to take inspiration from its parent film series in tone and genre, while separating itself from the films’ narrative and titular villain, Ghostface. The first two seasons followed this plan to primarily positive reviews, as the show toed the line between parodying and sincerely utilising the horror tropes the franchise is known for its satire of with a sense of savvy aplomb. The second outing received even better reviews than the first - a rarity within the horror genre - with praise for the sharpness of both wit and acting from the cast.
Season three saw the show take a sharp left turn, with the show rebooted with a new cast, setting, and reintroduction of a Ghostface incarnation under the subtitle Resurrection. Despite confusing many pre-existing viewers, this iteration was still received well by critics, with many praising the increased diversity and solid performances. Though this season would prove to be its last, dashing hopes for the show to grow into a self-aware slasher anthology, Scream certainly leaves a legacy that only benefits the franchise and still makes for an exciting watch.
