10 Best Slasher Horror TV Shows

5. Scream Queens

American Horror Story 1984
Fox

A delightfully devious slasher comedy from the minds behind American Horror Story, Scream Queens landed on Fox in 2015 with a stacked celebrity cast. Set in the hallowed grounds of an Ivy League-esque private university, the show primarily follows the members of sorority Kappa Kappa Tau as they are continually targeted by a serial killer operating under the guise of the school’s Red Devil mascot.

If these tropes sound familiar, you’d be right, but Scream Queens is self aware through and through. Having recruited modern cinematic screen queens like Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd and Keke Palmer alongside the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis for the lead roles, the show knows exactly what game its playing, and manages to successfully satirise the cliches of not only the horror genre, but the glorification of college life and prevalence of toxic female friendships on screen.

Though switching to a new, hospital drama setting for its second season to shake things up, Scream Queens struggled to make it past its second season. Creator Ryan Murphy did confirm he was working on a third instalment as of 2020, though, so you have no excuse not to check the prior seasons out while we wait for news. After all, where else are you going to see Ariana Grande attempt to avert her grizzly murder by posting a Facebook status?
