10 Best Songs From Community
6. Pocket Full Of Hawthornes
Pocket Full Of Hawthornes is probably the campest Greendale ever went, and with the Dean around, that’s really saying something. The anthem to Pierce’s family wipes business, the song is performed by RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Shangela, who also appeared recently in A Star Is Born.
Though Pierce did make many a homophobic joke in his time, most of them were merely ‘you’re gay’, and seemed to come from a place of ignorance rather than hatred. It’s no surprise then that while he initially feels uncomfortable with the popularity of his product within the gay community, he embraces it once he realises there’s money to be made.
Yeah, it’s a little rainbow capitalism but it’s nice to see Pierce being so wholesome.
As for the song itself is infectiously catchy, and quite a bit better than a lot of the autotuned drag queen songs. As drag anthems go, it’s totally fitting with the overt sexuality, over the top ridiculousness and ultra irony of the terrible writing.
There’s a ten minute mix available online (to make up for only getting 30 seconds in the show), but you might never get it out of your head if you sit through the whole thing.
