7. Teach Me How To Understand Christmas

Teach Me How To Understand Christmas came during the Glee parody episode, Regional Holiday Music. Amongst the many things lampooned in the episode was the way pop star divas often tie infantilism and ditziness together and expect it to equal sexiness.

Going back to the likes of Betty Boop and Marilyn Monroe, it’s still a fairly popular image today. In terms of Christmas records, Santa Baby is probably the biggest culprit, and writer Megan Ganz noted that as her inspiration.

Having Annie, who herself is infantilised by Community but in a less exploitative way, perform the song adds an extra layer of meta; something Community would never shy away from.

Taking the parody to extremes, Annie starts off the song as an idiot, unable to even open a box. When she plops the stocking on her head and complains ‘I can’t see’ it peaks, before getting deliberately aggressively (and uncomfortably) sexy, with Annie calling Jeff ‘daddy’ and herself ‘a silly Christmas baby’.

Of course though, Community leave themselves somewhere to go, and Annie dissolves into literal crawling and baby talk. The tune is catchy and fits a Christmassy tone, but it’s the hilarious lyrics & Alison Brie’s pergothat really make this one.
