6. Trapped In The Closet
Well if you thought the Mormons got some wicked hazing, then you haven't seen anything yet.
Scientology is a very eccentric religious movement, famed for their relentless smear campaigns against any who criticise them. Therefore, they were prime targets for Stone and Parker, who generated one of their funniest, and most controversial episodes, mocking the religion by using alleged real-life doctrines and scathing satire.
Trapped in the Closet shows Stan becoming a prophet for the Scientologist religion, as they believe he is the reincarnation of the organisation's founder. Alongside this, Tom Cruise comes to the Marsh home and hides in Stan's closet, and a collection of celebrities, including John Travolta, R Kelly and Nicole Kidman try to get him out.
What makes this episode so superb is that it works even without the connections to real-life. Seeing Stan become a prophet for organised religion is a hilarious set-up even if you ignored the context, and the wild theories on the origins of humanity - that the show claims are Scientologists real beliefs - sound exactly like the kind of thing that would exist in a South Park episode.
Additionally, the unsubtle innuendo behind Cruise's time in the closet, with his friends trying to convince him to "come out" is utterly amusing and helps balance out the episodes satire with some goofy and irreverent comedy.
