10 Best Spaceships In The Doctor Who Universe

5. The Mondasian Colony Ship

On the opposite end of the size spectrum, the Mondasian colony ship featured in Series 10's World Enough And Time/The Doctor Falls is one of the most gargantuan ships in Who history, clocking in at a beefy 100 miles wide, and 400 miles long.

On the downside, its insane length proves to be a problem when the front of the ship veers too close to a black hole, causing time to speed up at the bottom end, rather significantly: when two days has passed on the flight deck, over a thousand years has passed on the lowest floor of the ship.

It's a far from ideal situation for the crew, but it's a great hook for an episode, allowing us to explore many areas of the ship while observing the effects of the black hole.

Inside, it's got over 1000 floors, many of them large enough to fit entire cities. And cities do indeed exist onboard this mighty machine, with the effects of the time dilation causing brand-new civilisations to spring up on various floors. There's also a huge countryside area that doubles as a solar farm - an area that's so big, it genuinely feels like you're outside on planet Earth, rather than inside a metal spacecraft.

The ship is so vast that it could probably work as a setting for its own TV show, an anthology series that explores the various pockets of life that have grown throughout its many floors. If not, then there's an untold amount of story for Big Finish to mine here.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
