Star Trek Flashback

While the framing story of the episode centres on Tuvok, this is all about George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney. The return to familiar, TOS-era movie sets and costumes was a treat for the fans as the franchise celebrated its thirtieth birthday. Over on Deep Space Nine, Trials And Tribble-Ations brought the modern crew back to the classic era, while this actually featured the return of two Original Series stars.

Takei needs little introduction, appearing as Captain Sulu around the time of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Much of the crew of the Excelsior return from the film as well, including Grace Lee Whitney, who appears once more as Commander Janice Rand. While the plot is about as thin as it's possible to be, simply seeing the Excelsior zooming through space was enough to kick the nostalgia fans into gear.

Though the ship in question was portrayed with a new model, one with glowing nacelles where the classic had none, it is still a beauty to behold. Michael Ansara also returns to play Kang, one of the three Dahar Masters who previously appeared in Bloody Oath.

This is a gift for the fans, pure and simple.
