5. A World Between Worlds

Star Wars Rebels Ahsoka Darth Vader
Lucasfilm

Time travel can be a double-edged lightsaber. On the one hand, it opens up countless storytelling possibilities. On the other, it can eliminate all stakes in the story, and could potentially solve every problem the heroes encounter.

A World Between Worlds walks this fine line beautifully. After the Loth-wolves lead Ezra through a magical door, he discovers that he is in the titular realm, a pathway between all space and time.

He finds a strange door through which he pulls Ahsoka, saving her from her duel with Darth Vader from the Season 2 finale. The pair team up, and as they plan to save Kanan from his fate, Palpatine arrives, forcing them back into the real world, but not before Ezra turns down the chance to save Kanan, since doing so would kill the rest of his friends. Upon reentering Lothal, Ezra seals the Temple off and says goodbye to Kanan for good.

This time travel adventure not only reenforces the stakes as permanent by explaining the ripple effects of reversing Kanan's death, it also establishes itself as a one-off adventure. Ezra can't use the World Between Worlds to kill Thrawn and Palpatine as babies, since he sealed it off. Still, the time travel in Star Wars feels unique to Star Wars, with its creepy nature, vastness, and voice cameos from every generation of the saga.
