10 Best Treehouse Of Horror Episodes

2. Treehouse Of Horror I

The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror
Fox

Now we reach the very first Treehouse of Horror episode, aired in 1990 as part of season 2, it is the only episode that truly feels like the creators were trying to create something scary. Although still featuring the classic Simpsons charm, this episode feels dark and creepy, bolstered by the always excellent James Earl Jones who lends his voice to each of the segments.

In the first segment, Bad Dream House, the Simpsons move into a haunted house which they managed to purchase at an extremely low price. They begin to realise that there's something wrong when the walls start to bleed and objects fly through the air. The segment results in the family being possessed by the spirits of the house and compelled to chase each other with knives.

In the second segment, Hungry are the Damned, the Simpsons are abducted by aliens. This is the first appearance of Kang and Kodus who would go on to be a staple of each Treehouse of Horror episode. They are told that they will be taken to the alien's home world of Rigel IV and are encouraged to eat as much as possible. Later Lisa becomes convinced that the aliens mean to eat them.

And in the final segment, The Raven, the show delivers a devilishly creepy retelling of the classic tale by Edgar Allan Poe. Beautifully narrated by James Earl Jones this segment manages to keep the feelings of fear and paranoia even when projected through such comedic characters. Taken out of context of The Simpsons, this short film could be considered a horror classic.

When not spending time writing bios about himself, Thomas enjoys pretending that the stories he's spent years writing are famous TV shows, achieving the same cult status as Twin Peaks or Lloyd in Space.
