1. Making A Murderer

We've left the longest until last.

Making A Murderer crosses two seasons. The first caused such a stir when it launched in late-2015 that a follow-up was perhaps inevitable, assuming the filmmakers could find enough material. Thankfully for them, the life of Steven Avery is busy and controversial enough that they could probably produce a third if they so wished.

Almost everyone perusing through this list will know a few things about Avery's story. His 18-year stay in prison for supposed attempted murder and sexual assault dips into the same kind of judicial corruption as earlier examples Out Of Thin Air and The Innocent Man, but it goes even deeper than both. Seriously, Making is immersive, so brace yourself to dedicate some time if you want to squeeze the most out of it.

His re-arrest between 2005-2007 is similarly interesting, and the second series' focus on appeals against Avery's incarceration give the story yet more life. This is simply one of the greatest and most exhaustive true crime docs out there.
