The word Grinch takes on a whole other meaning in this wonderful episode of How I Met Your Mother. Released in December 2006, Season 2 Episode 11, titled How Lily Stole Christmas, features brilliant performances from the main cast in a Christmas story that centres around the themes of forgiveness, love and teaching children swear words.

The plot: After overhearing an old answer machine message of Ted badmouthing Lily during her hiatus in San Francisco, Lily decides to pack up the Christmas wonderland she had created for Marshall until Ted apologises. Meanwhile, Robin draws the short straw and has to look after Barney who comes down with the flu.

Why it's awesome: Barney is hilariously pathetic when he is sick, and the line "I hate you - don't leave me!" perfectly encapsulates how we feel when we are ill and forced to take things slowly. Marshall is hilarious when he takes on the bowl of cookie dough in the post-credit scene, and Ted and Lily are able to finally clear the air between them when she apologises for leaving him and Marshall to go to San Francisco.
