10 Best TV Show Cold Opens Ever
8. It's Always Sunny In Philedelphia - Frank Sets Sweet Dee On Fire
Moving on from one sitcom to another. Always Sunny has an ingenious relationship with cold opens, as they continually make a joke out of their title cards. Something no other series has followed suit in.
You'll frequently find the title of the episode being turned into a gag in the intro. This has been used to significant effect in chapters such as "Sweet Dee Dates a Re****** Person" and "Sweet Dee Gets Audited", but the best has to be this example.
The outing starts in typical Sunny fashion, as the owners of Paddy's Pub bicker over trivial things. In this case, it's the state of the media and news. Mac bursts in excitedly, discussing how he's going to be on TV talking to a news reporter but is distraught to find out that they cut a lot of his interview.
He, Charlie and Frank then decide to make their own news, to which Dee displays her concern. Frank replies saying, "How's anybody gonna get hurt?", instantly cutting to the title card, Frank Sets Sweet Dee On Fire.
This gag is so quick and fully delves into the humour of the show. Dee always gets teased and hurt by the gang, Frank is oblivious to danger, and a simple idea - i.e. making a news show - becomes deadlier than it has any right to be.
