When it comes to thinking of shows that implemented the cold open structure best, it's impossible not to think of Malcolm in the Middle. Each chapter of this hilarious sitcom would start off with a bang, as you'd see a short - usually chaotic - scene that captures the hilarity of this dysfunctional family, normally with no baring on the plot.

The greatest cold open in the show's history has to be the incredibly brief intro to the season one finale, Waterpark. Here, the boys are quietly studying when their father Hal bursts into their room in a panic and quickly asks, "who wants to make $5?"

You then hear the family's matriarch calling out in shock as Hal informs the children that one of them will have to take a dive for some household crime he's committed.

After some haggling, the titular Malcolm is selected, and Hal proclaims to him that "you're a good son" before grabbing him and offering him up to Lois.

This happens in about thirty seconds but perfectly gives you a vibe for three of the main characters. It displays Hal's goofiness and panic, Lois' fearful discipline, and Malcolm's ability to make the best of a bad situation. It's quintessential Malcolm in the Middle.
