It's looking increasingly likely that the television version of Constantine might succeed where Keanu Reeve's film version failed. Based on the DC Comics' Hellblazer and featuring a significant amount of paranormal activity, it serves to bridge the gap between the superhero television genre and more horror-influenced shows like Supernatural and Grimm. Welsh actor Matt Ryan takes on the leading role of John Constantine, an irreverent occult detective who fights against the forces of darkness, and early reviews offer nothing less than enthusiastic praise for the show's star. NBC seems supremely confident in its appeal, using it as a headlining act at this summer's San Diego Comic Con, where they screened the entire pilot episode for audiences. Constantine has the potential to grow and develop over the course of several seasons, with surprisingly nuanced and three-dimensional performances from all of the show's leading actors.
