There was a slight temptation to chuck The Simpsons in with Community for an honourable mention.
After all, it seems strange that the yellow family have never won for Outstanding Comedy. However, since they’ve won just the 33 Emmys, 10 for Outstanding Animation and several more for Outstanding Voice Over, they’ve had more than enough recognition.
There’s an equally iconic yellow character who’s yet to register a win, despite notching up nine nominations in its time, five in major categories.
SpongeBob Squarepants has kicked it with the big boys of cartoons, going head to head for the top animation gongs several times. Its losses there are understandable, if a little frustrating. It’s also been passed over for Outstanding Children’s Program before, which feels unforgivable.
All those SpongeBob memes are no accident. The show, especially during its first ten years, put a huge focus on animation, visual flavour and unique sequences.
2019 marks its 20th anniversary, just if you needed to feel old today.
The show was endlessly inventive, had some brilliant layered humour and remains a timeless classic, even if some aspects of the humour in modern episodes haven’t particularly aged gracefully.
