As the main protagonist of the story, it came as a shock to viewers that Ragnar's journey did indeed have an end.

With Travis Fimmel's brilliant performance of a cocky yet ruthless Viking leader, Ragnar was clearly the figurehead of the franchise. But since Vikings is loosely based on the real-world life of Ragnar Lodbrok, history fans were aware that his end was inevitable.

Ragnar disappeared for a number of years after the betrayal of his brother Rollo in France. An aged and broken man, he lived as a hermit where no one could find him. Following several failed suicide attempts, as well as failing to goad one of his sons into killing him, Ragnar decides to return to England to seek his fate there.

In many tellings of his death, he was always fated to be defeated by King Ælle, who we meet several times throughout the show. However, Ragnar's journey in England seemed finished towards his final moments in the show, but a strange prophecy claimed "you will die on the day the blind man sees you".

Ragnar took this to mean King Ecbert and sailed for a final time to England with only his youngest son, Ivar, and a handful of hired men as company.

King Ecbert refused to have Ragnar executed and instead handed him over to King Ælle. Ragnar endured several days of torture before being buried alive in a pit of snakes, proudly exclaiming his arrival into Valhalla.
