4. Secrets - Season 1, Episode 18
Although Secrets certainly starts out like a filler episode with Wally, Conner and Megan attending a Halloween dance while Zatanna takes Artemis out on the town for some crime-fighting action, it actually tells a really interesting story. The Halloween plot is a bit goofy but what really sets this one part is the increasingly dark journey Zatanna and Artemis end up experiencing.
The two encounter a powerful psychopath named Harm who wields the mysterious sword of Beowulf. Not long after, the two heroes run into a ghostly girl who just says the word “secret.”
It turns out that Harm is the brother of the young girl who is a ghost because he killed her. He committed this heinous act in order to purge himself of love and emotions. After this awful revelation, the three come together and, after a brief struggle, are able to defeat Harm.
A neon sign flashes the word “secret” and the two realize that was the last thing the young girl saw before she died at the hands of her brother. It's dark and mysterious, but illustrates just how mature the show was when it wanted to be - supernatural elements and all.
