10 Biggest Star Trek Battles We Never Got To See

4. The Battle Of Maxia

Captain Jean-Luc Picard was the commander of a ship long before he ever stepped aboard the Enterprise-D. The USS Stargazer, an underpowered and undermanned ship, threatened to shake itself apart at any moment, though her CO loved her dearly. The Stargazer’s final mission was almost lost to time, save for the conniving Damon Bok.

The Battle of Maxia was famous for several reasons. First, it served as a disastrous first contact with the Ferengi. They had been billed as the next big villains in Star Trek in the first season of the Next Generation, though the audience never truly got a real example as to why. This battle may have gone a distance to prove it.

They surprised the Stargazer and almost destroyed her in their first volley. The now infamous ‘Picard manoeuvre’, wherein the captain ordered the ship to engage in a one-second warp flight, confusing the Ferengi ship’s sensors, allowed the Starfleet vessel to destroy their opponent. However, the damage was so great that Picard ordered the crew to abandon ship, little realising that the Constellation-class vessel would remain adrift for another twenty years.
