10 Biggest Star Trek Battles We Never Got To See

5. The Earth-Romulan War

This conflict fell in-between the events of The Original Series and Enterprise, with heavy casualties on both sides. While the Romulans may have seemed like the aggressors in this situation, that is not to say that they were all warmongering. The commander of the Bird of Prey that the Enterprise encounters has no wish to plunge his people back into a bloody war.

Almost one hundred years earlier, Captain Archer and the SS Enterprise encountered two earlier models of Bird of Prey, decloaking and warning them to avoid Romulan space. This would be the first page in the long conflict, though it would not erupt for several years, even after the Romulans attempted to turn the Andorians, Tellarites and Starfleet against each other, using a drone with holographic technology to do so.

Much of the war was conducted using long-range missiles, ensuring that Starfleet and the Empire never actually came face to face in all of these encounters. It wasn’t until the reveal in Balance of Terror that they discovered the shared Romulan/Vulcan ancestry, leading to discussions on the nature of bigotry on the bridge. This early war was a defining moment in the Federation’s history.
