A darker, edger version of Stargate that didn’t really gel with the core fanbase, Universe nonetheless picked up some good notices in its short two season run. This spin-off focused on the crew of the spaceship Destiny as they explored the galaxy and tried to make their way back to Earth.

In the last episode Destiny is badly damaged and the crew need to travel out of their current universe and into the next one. It’ll be a three year trip, so they need to go into stasis. The snag is that they’re a stasis pod short, so young scientist Eli has to stay awake. While the rest go to sleep his only hope is to repair his broken pod, or die a slow death when the life support system shuts down. The final shot is of Eli looking contemplatively into space, with his future not exactly certain.

The Stargate TV franchise had pretty much run its course by the time Universe was cancelled so there was no real hope of a continuation. In a way the melancholy ending fit the tone of the show, managing to be sad but hopeful at the same time.
