5. How Did Rimmer Escape From Death? - Red Dwarf
Red Dwarf had a few cliffhangers during its run, such as the season six finale that killed off the entire cast. Patient fans had to wait four years for the show to return to explain how they survived. They had to be even more patient with the season eight finale.
The season ended with Rimmer onboard Red Dwarf as it was being destroyed by a metal eating virus. The rest of the crew had vanished into a mirror universe (long story), and he had no way to escape. Death himself comes to visit, ready to take Rimmer to the next life. He responds by kneeing Death in the groin and running away.
This cliffhanger was going to be resolved in the Red Dwarf movie, which ended up in development hell and was never made. The show finally returned a full decade later in 2009.
It mostly ignored the cliffhanger entirely, although season ten ended with Rimmer about to explain how he made it out. He’s interrupted before he can say anything.
