10 Biggest Wasted Opportunities In Game Of Thrones
7. LGBT+ Representation
On the face of it, this might seem like a bit of a shallow criticism. In a way, that’s fair; Game Of Thrones had much more LGBT+ representation than other major network shows, especially back in 2011 when the show launched.
However, the representation took a nosedive as the series went on. While it’s not as damaging as other factors here, it’s definitely an example of the show wasting potential.
The worst part is that this isn’t potential from the books or overhyped expectations; the show had generated all this goodwill itself.
The relationship between Loras Tyrell and Renly Baratheon is given plenty of focus in the show, while it’s only implied in the books. Margaery Tyrell displays a fairly healthy attitude for the era too, not caring who Renly loves as long as he provides her with an heir.
Oberyn Martell and Ellaria Sand’s pansexual relationship gets some screen time too, but once Oberyn and Renly are dead, Ellaria and Loras’ screen time is drastically reduced, their sexuality scarcely mentioned.
Yara’s sexuality too gets a passing mention, but nothing particularly concrete. Though it’s a small complaint, the dropping of LGBT+ representation is a valid one.
