Pilou Asbaek is one of the actors who has discussed the failures of Season 8 openly, along with fellow Dane Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. You get the sense that Asbaek was very excited to play the fearsome Euron Greyjoy, but unfortunately the character was hobbled pretty much from the start.

His first appearance, tossing the hateful Balon Greyjoy off a bridge at Pyke, was brimming with potential, as was the evil, mystical swaggering Euron of the books. Unfortunately, his first appearance was also his best, as everything was mediocre from then out.

In the books, he’s a mix between Tywin & Ramsay; cunning yet evil, but charming and charismatic too. He tortures prisoners for fun, but always has a grand plan. He’s also an accomplished sorcerer who can gather storm clouds, which might have been useful had Daenerys not simply forgot about him.

His final battle with Jaime and eventual death seemed hollow and narratively nonsensical too. Apparently it was only added in as an in-joke because he and Coster-Waldau constantly spoke Danish to each other on set.

Which is in keeping with them wasting Euron to serve the already popular characters and avoiding shaking things up too much.
