10 Biggest Wasted Opportunities In Game Of Thrones
3. Jon’s Parentage & Varys’ Letter
You could make the argument that Jon’s parentage was a key motivator in Daenerys’ descent into madness, as his Targaryen blood meant he was ahead of her in line for the throne. However, for a show so full of intrigue, it definitely counts as wasted potential.
The finale alone had a season’s worth of plot in it, while the shorter six episode season tried to deal with the Night King, Cersei, and Dany’s transformation. There was too much going on to ever explore the intricate nature of Jon & Daenerys’ relationship.
Then there’s Varys’ letter. He tells Tyrion that too many people know Jon’s bloodline now, that it’s ‘no longer a secret, it’s information’, and in a very out of character move, openly tells Jon he’s aware.
This is followed by Varys sending ravens containing the information that Jon is the true heir. Who to? Well, who cares?
The meeting of the Lords of Westeros has too many problems to delve into (why don’t Dorne & the Iron Islands seek independence? Why are Sam, Brienne and Davos there? Did Bran allow everyone to die so he could become King?), but this is the most glaring.
Surely someone received Jon’s letter, yet it’s never mentioned.
