3. Halfrek / Cecily

Episode: Fool for Love, Older and Far Away (Buffy, Season 5, 6) In the season five episode "Fool for Love" we get a look at Spike's rather pathetic love life back when he was just plain old William, a hapless human and struggling poet. He declares his love for one Cecily, a rather upper class lady, only to be rather brutally and publicly rejected. Later in the series we are introduced to the character of Halfrek, a vengeance demon pal of Anya. Both roles were played by actress Kali Rocha. It's not uncommon for TV shows to recycle actors, but for whatever reason (distinctive voice, other features) Rocha's casting stood out. In a nod to this, in the season six episode "Older and Far Away" a moment of recognition between the two characters - Spike and Halfrek - was written into the show. Halfrek calls Spike "William" and he clearly recognizes her, but when confronted, they both deny knowing one another. Both Whedon and Rocha later stated that Cecily was in fact Halfrek, although there are some timeline issues given that Halfrek is known to have been around in demon form earlier than Cecily (though a bit of magic could no doubt explain that).
