Until the very end of the show’s first season, The Master is trapped underground due to a curse. Therefore, it is left to his followers, the Order of Aurelius, to carry out his various evil plans. In the early episodes, one of the most prominent members of the Order is a female vampire called Darla.

Following the big reveal that Angel is a vampire, albeit one with a soul, it is also revealed that Darla is Angel’s sire, and the two of them travelled together for decades.

Darla tries to convince Angel to give in to whatever is left of his dark nature and kill Buffy. Instead, Angel eventually kills Darla to save Buffy’s life. Darla’s death came as surprise to many, as she was, at that point, below only The Master in terms of the series major villains. However, in terms of narrative and character development, it came at exactly the right time to prove to Buffy, and the audience, that Angel was truly not your average vamp.
