A fantastical re-imagining of Leonardo Da Vinci's life based on his works and secrets, as well as based on occult conspiracies and mythologies of the Renaissance, this series was a visually stunning, proto sci-fi spectacle with fantasy elements and an epic sense of scale and action.
It was strange, mysterious, and firmly adult, taking narrative risks many shows at the time didn't, and though it was about as historical as its own outlandish time travel elements, it brought many of Da Vinci's surprisingly real life experiences and inventions and concepts to a modern audience, and provided a fascinating, compelling, flawed genius protagonist in Leo, with extremely likeable and complex characters as his friends and enemies, from the Medicis to the Vatican itself. It also did a fantastic job showing the real life diversity of people, religions, and cultures in Renaissance era Italy.
Something unique about the series was its stunning visualisations of Leo's thought processes, bringing his beautiful sketches to life in animation onscreen.
Its uniqueness and mature nature seemed not to garner enough attention to renew it for a third season, but this was a series that deserved renewal for its epic scale, gorgeous visuals and music, and high concepts.
