10 Cancelled TV Shows That Totally Deserve A Ripper Street Resurrection
5. Torchwood
Russell T Davies brought us this spinoff in 2005 after the success of the revived Doctor Who. It starred John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, a character who had a prominent role in several episodes of Doctor Who under Davies. Featuring a much darker tone than its predecessor Torchwood explores many different themes over its run. Chief amongst them was the issue of immortality and the lack of any sort of traditional life after death. However it also looked at the role of humans in the wider universe and lesbian, gay and bisexual issues. Many of the main characters, such as Jack, werent able to be categorised is strictly gay or heterosexual and were far more fluid in their relationships. Sharing the same world as Doctor Who meant that viewers got to experience the more fantastical elements of that series but in a more mature way. Despite mixed reviews from critics it always brought in a good number of viewers and was broadcast in several foreign markets, proving it could be successful in multiple countries. While never officially cancelled it has been on a hiatus since 2011 and there doesnt seem to be any plans to bring it back from the BBC. While John Barrow and Eve Myles have worked on other projects since both have previously indicated they would like to return to the show at some point, so fans can be hopeful that a revival could go ahead.
