3. Janet Leigh

Janet Leigh is best known for her statting role in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Even if you haven't seen the film, you've likely been subjected to her cruel demise in THAT shower scene. She's also the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis, who would go on to star in an iconic horror series herself.

In "Forgotten Lady", the first episode of Season 5, Leigh appears as an ageing actress who decides to murder her husband to secure the funds she needs to get her big comeback project off the ground.

It's a fantastic episode that drops a hard-hitting emotional twist in the final 10 minutes, setting it apart from the majority of Columbo stories.

Leigh is exceptional here and the strength of her performance only becomes more apparent on repeated viewings as you begin to fully understand the real motivations behind some of her character's actions.
