10 Changes The Simpsons Hoped You Wouldn’t Notice

9. The Newer Animation Is WAY Less Expressive

The Simpsons Changes
20th Television

This is not to say that the newer, cleaner animation style of The Simpsons is bad. In fact, the upgraded HD animation has allowed for a greater depth and depiction in terms of what the series can actually show on screen.

However, it is also fair to say that in the earlier days, the rougher style of animation allowed for a greater degree of expression in each of the characters. Take the image above that was doing the rounds on social media.

In the later image, Marge is in clear HD, with the shelves and ceiling behind and above her clearly visible. There is no arguing that it is a beautiful shot of her. However, in the earlier image, while it is a much rougher style, there is something in the way that she is drawn - something more human almost, which we appreciate is an odd thing to say about a show populated with yellow cartoons!

It's impossible not to notice the difference in animation, but one thing that the show clearly hoped no one would pay attention to is the fact that, less sophisticated or not, the earlier style of drawing was a more immersive and engaging depiction of television's most famous family.
