10 Changes The Simpsons Hoped You Wouldn’t Notice

3. Bart Is No Longer An Eighties Baby

The Simpsons That 90s Show
20th Television

Part of the running method of keeping The Simpsons fresh is that none of the characters seem to age. With their ages somewhat of a constant, things like birthdays and world events shift to match where they currently are at. There has been much mocking of Donald Trump in The Simpsons of the last few years, while back in the nineties, President Clinton received the bulk of the gags, not to mention the fantastic episode with George Bush Snr. moving in across the street.

However, That '90s Show, an episode of The Simpsons' 19th season, poses a fairly big issue for the show's history. Some of the strongest episodes of The Simpsons early years included the general backstories of Homer and Marge. These depicted Marge as a free-speech proponent, while Homer was living his best/worst life in the sixties and seventies.

Bart came along in the early eighties, with him being 10 years old by the time the show debuted in 1989. That '90s Show firmly establishes that Homer and Marge were childless in the early nineties.

The main issue with this episode is how much it tramples on what went before and, more specifically, it attacks some of the best episodes that The Simpsons ever released. The writers might have hoped that they could simply reinvent the family for modern times, but unfortunately they had already done far too strong of a job
