10 Classic Doctor Who Enemies Who Need To Return

7. The Meddling Monk

Now here's a mischievous man of the cloth who desperately deserves a return, especially with the show's 60th anniversary on the horizon. He's the Doctor's original recurring Time Lord nemesis, known only as: The Meddling Monk.

First introduced in the brilliant First Doctor story, The Time Meddler, in 1965, this Time Lord (never named on-screen, but dubbed Mortimus in other media) was pretending to be a monk in Northumbira, 1066. Here he was attempting to change the outcome of the Battle of Hastings to avert the Norman Conquest of England.

Details are slowly drip-fed to the audience and the characters throughout the story, before the big reveal that the Monk has a TARDIS. This was a huge moment in the show's history, as it was the first appearance of one of the Doctor's own people (before the term Time Lord had even been coined), aside from his granddaughter, Susan.

Unlike the Master, he's not strictly evil - rather, he just likes to mess with history for the sake of it. He'd go on to appear one more time on-screen, in the epic 1965-66 story, The Daleks' Master Plan, before disappearing from the show forever. However, he has had a healthy life in other media, where his origins and character have been fleshed out further.

This is a character that is long overdue for a return to screen, and given the significance he holds in the show's history, it's about time he receives a little more respect.
