4. Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars

Beloved by children of a certain age, Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars was a staple of kids’ TV in the early ‘90s, backed by a memorable intro and iconic characters like Deadeye Duck.

The action centred on the titular O'Hare, a space pilot leading the inept United Animals Federation in an intergalactic war against the dastardly Toad Empire, who are intent on conquering the galaxy and enslaving those who stand in their wake.

O’Hare is joined by a rag-tag crew of space fighters that includes the aforementioned duck, a four-armed, one-eye reformed space pirates and Willy DuWitt a pre-teen genius who winds up onboard the gang’s spaceship, The Righteous Indignation, after slipping through a portal into a parallel universe.

Release alongside a line of Hasbro toys and a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Bucky O’Hare only ran for 13 episodes but has retained a cult-like status among fans.

What many probably never realised, however, was that it actually started life as a comic book in the mid-1980s. Written by Larry Hama with artwork by Michael Golden, Bucky O’Hare first appeared in the Continuity Comics anthology Echo of Futurepast before striking out on its own with a graphic novel that was eventually turned into a graphic novel. Unfortunately, that was as far as it went.
