10 Controversies Netflix Wants You To Forget
6. Danny Masterson Scandal
Bringing together two of the stars of That 70's Show for a new comedy, 2016's The Ranch seemed like a surefire hit for Netflix. Right up until March 2017, when four women filed rape allegations against Danny Masterson. Masterson denied the allegations and was neither charged nor arrested, and Netflix stood by him at first. It was only when a fifth woman came forward in December 2017 that, amid mounting pressure from viewers, the streaming giant fired him from the show.
Chrissie Carnell Bixler, one of the first to come forward, claims that two people in a car chased her while filming her. She also claims that the Church of Scientology, of which Masterson is a member, has encouraged its members to post Craigslist ads in her name, seeking anal sex. Which is worrying even before you consider that her home security system has repeatedly been hacked and disabled. And then there's the fact that her dog was mysteriously killed shortly after she filed her police report.
While Netflix are likely glad to be shot of the situation before it escalated like this, there's no denying that they effectively ignored it for nine months.
