Our hero didn't have a huge amount of success with relationships in season one. Fans of the comics are aware that Barry is destined to marry Iris West but the portrayal of Iris in the show made this a tough idea to swallow. Candice Patton, who plays Iris, does a perfectly serviceable job but is burdened with some extremely tedious dialogue and shaky plots and there's no getting around the ick factor of Barry pining for someone who is basically his sister. Barry's other love interests never presented much threat to his feelings for Iris and faded out pretty quickly. Season two will give us Patty Spivot, in a slight variation on her comic book character, who harboured a long term, secret crush on Barry. Rather than being a lab assistant, she'll play a cop and Joe West's new partner. Hopefully she will also have an opportunity to actually date Barry and provide a helpful distraction from the whole Iris mess. Although whether he can get her attention when she's on the case to catch a (Captain) Cold is anyone's guess.
