10 Crazy Doctor Who Theories Fans Actually Believed
5. The Midnight Entity Is A TARDIS
The Midnight entity is one of Doctor Who’s most memorable one-off monsters, despite the fact that its true name, and true nature, were never actually revealed.
But according to one theory, the entity wasn’t a new foe at all. On the contrary, it was something much closer to home: a disembodied TARDIS.
This hypothesis leans heavily on the 2011 story The Doctor’s Wife, which established that the essence of a TARDIS can be separated from its physical form. In this case, the matrix of the Doctor’s TARDIS finds a temporary new home in the body of the humanoid Idris.
So, could we have witnessed a similar thing with Sky Silvestry in Midnight? It would certainly explain why the entity was so keen to possess a Time Lord!
And that's not the only supporting argument either. Maybe the creature’s copycat antics were the result of a TARDIS translation circuit trying to assert itself in a new body. In which case, perhaps its omniscient, time-travelling abilities are what enabled it to anticipate speech.
It’s a nice idea, but let's face it, the parallels are completely coincidental – not least because The Doctor’s Wife and Midnight were written three years apart by two totally different writers.
Moreover, the whole point of the Midnight entity is that we never know what it really is. It’s fun to speculate, but some things, like the Doctor’s name, are best left a mystery.
