Fan speculation during Series 6 was absolutely wild – and with good reason. Under Steven Moffat's watch, Doctor Who was more intricate and arc-driven than ever before, with lots of questions remaining after the explosive series opener.

Questions like: How was the Doctor going to escape his apparent death? Is Amy really pregnant? If so, who’s the father? And who is Jim the Fish?!

In retrospect, it seems strange that the identity of Melody Pond's father was ever up for debate. But when the series was airing in 2011, there was a very real belief that the baby wasn’t Rory’s. After all, he wasn’t the only bloke in the TARDIS at the time Melody was conceived...

Looking back, there’s absolutely no way Doctor Who was going to incorporate an adulterous relationship between two of its leads. But you can hardly blame fans for thinking something was up!

A love triangle between Amy, the Doctor, and Rory had been insinuated since the get-go, and Moffat played on this in Series 6, with ambiguous hints to Amy’s true lover (“I know you think it ought to be him, but it’s not. It’s you”).

Thankfully, the eventual reveal of Melody's parentage (and that River was the Doctor’s wife) put any notion of a romance between the Doctor and Amy to bed, allowing fans across the world to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Shippers notwithstanding.
