In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Q Who?, the god-like Q decided to teach Picard and his crew that they were unprepared for the horrors that awaited them by flinging them into uncharted space. It wasn't long before they encountered the Borg, a collective of cybernetically-enhanced humanoids.

The Borg collective was a grotesque parody of the Federation that represented everything that Federation members feared. Driven by a desire for technological perfection, the zombie-like Borg traveled the galaxy in search of technology. They assimilated entire cultures in pursuit of their goals. Individual members of an assimilated species were transformed into Borg drones by being infected with microscopic robots referred to as nanoprobes.

Borg drones were stripped of any sense of self and were identified only by number. A drone's consciousness merged with millions of others as part of a hive mind. While other species used technology as a tool, the Borg were completely integrated with their technology.
