10 Most Cringeworthy Doctor Who Moments From The '80s
9. Oscar's Death - The Two Doctors (1985)
Robert Holmes is well known for his double acts, especially in his later scripts. Who could forget Jago and Litefoot, who were so popular that they got their own audio series? Or Glitz and Dibber from Trial of a Time Lord? Garron and Unstoffe? Oscar and Anita...? Yeah, that last one doesn't quite work, does it? Probably because, in order for a Holmesian double act to work properly, both characters have to have some variant degree of charm, and Oscar has none. If he did, then maybe his death scene in the second episode of The Two Doctors would be a bit more poignant and less...well, self-indulgent. Now, it's obvious that Oscar sees himself as a grand actor, and in his final moments he should be allowed a last performance - but just because he's already in a restaurant doesn't give him license to chew the scenery. The result is one of the few deaths in Doctor Who, of any era, that makes you want to laugh, cringe, and roll your eyes all at the same time. But tears? Nah. Even the Doctor's "Good night, sweet prince" quip seems more bemused than anything else. Still, it's better than "You're just desserts..." Honestly, what is it with that man in this episode?
