10 Darkest Alternate Timelines In Doctor Who

4. All Of History Occurs At Once (The Wedding Of River Song)

Series 6 finale The Wedding Of River Song depicts one of the most bizarre alternate timelines we've ever seen in the show - one in which all of history occurs at once.

This means that random events, people, and technology from throughout Earth's history are all existing simultaneously: there's an old-fashioned steam train running through central London, Charles Dickens is being interviewed on television, and Winston Churchill is referred to as the "Holy Roman Emperor".

Only Doctor Who could do something this nutty and incorporate it into the plot!

This timeline originated from River Song's refusal to kill the Doctor, an act which altered a fixed point in time. And while the timeline itself doesn't seem too bad - humanity seems to be living quite happily, albeit in this crazy new reality - it qualifies for our list because of what it ultimately means for the universe at large.

Basically, all of history happening at once is not a good thing. The Doctor notes that reality is "fatally compromised" and that, eventually, everything will simply "fall apart". Doom is inevitable.

Luckily then, River eventually accepts that she has to murder her husband, who it turns out is actually a life-sized robot piloted by miniature people. Because why not.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
