10 Doctor Who Monsters That Need Reworking

8. The Sontarans

The Sontarans first revival story was incredibly well executed. In it we saw a classic era monster return almost exactly as they were depicted in the stories before. The Sontaran were ruthless killing clones with no conscience. Then Strax happened. We like Strax, don€™t get us wrong, but he does no favours for the Sontaran race. He is basically a long-running gag, producing cheap laughs for the children viewers. The only good part of his recent return in €˜Deep Breath€™ was when he contemplated killing himself to save Vastra and Jenny, and that was only because he was being brutal rather than funny. And so we want to see a story depicting the Sontaran as they once were €“ a fearless race to fear and cower from. Perhaps this new narrative could depict the Sontaran and Rutan war on screen finally €“ it would, after all, be the perfect way to reintroduce another classic monster to the new run. This war could begin on Earth and see Strax facing some inner conflict which would ultimately result in him leaving the Paternoster gang to re-join his Sontaran friends. After all, Strax has more than made up for whatever he did to make the Doctor call upon him in €˜A Good Man Goes to War€™. This story would ultimately serve two ends €“ to make Strax a viable character (we could still revisit him every so often whenever the Sontaran return, perhaps showing him to have some sway with the Sontarans€™ ruthless ways) and to make the Sontarans brutal once more. Either way we need an episode which sees the Sontarans as a threat again.
