10 Doctor Who Monsters That Need Reworking

9. The Cybermen

It€™s common knowledge that the Cybermen will be returning in series eight; they have seemingly recreated a classic shot from 1968€™s €˜The Invasion€™. They will be returning in a two part finale, which is good because the Cybermen stories of late have been rather lacklustre to say the least. Neil Gaiman€™s €˜Nightmare in Silver€™ was much too rushed and whilst it delivered on establishing the new Cyberman form, it failed to deliver on a satisfyingly scary narrative. And don€™t even get us started on €˜The Time of the Doctor€™s€™ Handles who single-handedly (handedly / Handles, get it?) ruined the 48-year history of the silver menaces. So, this brings us nicely to series eight. Like the Daleks, a satisfying Cyberman story is needed, one which cements them for their nightmarish qualities we have come to know them for. Think €˜The Age of Steel€™ and not €˜Closing Time€™. The Cybermen have to be a viable threat and they have to be scary, otherwise they may as well be retired for good. Our dream story would see one of the Doctor€™s comrades converted into a Cyberman with no way of altering or reversing the process. Imagine that €“ a companion or friend of the Doctor as a Cyberman. That would make for a chilling tale in which the Doctor would have to battle his inner demons and conflicts as he ultimately destroys what once was his friend. Maybe Samuel Anderson€™s Danny Pink could fall foul of the Cybermen, which would nicely see Clara turn from the Doctor and depart. Series eight has been touted as a darker series after all€ As a side note, we also want to see the new redesign of the Cybermen confirmed once and for all as the Mondasian menaces rather than of Cybus origin. Even if both races have assimilated into one, we haven€™t had that confirmed on screen yet.
