10 Doctor Who Actors Who Have Gained Recognition In The US

8. John Barrowman

Don't be fooled by John Barrowman's American accent. He was actually born in Scotland and moved to the US as a wee boy but his singing career has made his face pretty much well known - to a certain demographic, at least - in all corners of the world. He's most notably a household name in the UK, of course, for his popular portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin off Torchwood but in recent years he's been lighting up our screens in various guises whether it's been through the means of acting, singing, dancing or even presenting. He was seriously on every channel going at one point. He's giving the Brits a much needed break at the moment, though, and that's because he's across the pond starring alongside Stephen Amell as wealthy businessman Malcolm Merlyn in Arrow. He originally guest starred in the series back in 2012 but was reinstated as a series regular for its latest third season. This isn't the first time he's leaving his stamp on American TV, though. Last year he guest starred in the ABC political thriller Scandal and before that, in 2010, he headed to Wisteria Lane for a 5 episode stint as eco-terrorist Patrick Logan in Desperate Housewives. It's reached the point where you're not even surprised when he pops up in your favourite show anymore but it's no wonder he keeps getting jobs in the US. He's certainly got the accent for it. There was, of course, the fourth series of Torchwood, Miracle Day, which counts as an American series too, as much as the BBC try to deny it. The less said about that, the better.
