Ah, Doctor Who. Surely one of the only shows on TV that an actor can star in and then not gain any recognition for their respective contribution? And that's not because they're bad in their roles, either. Entirely the opposite, in fact. It's more like they were so darned unrecognisable that most people don't even know they were in it! As a show about a 2,000 year old Time Lord who travels through the universe, it's bound to feature some weird and wonderful creatures from time to time. Usually they're on Earth, too, when the human race faces yet another extra terrestrial excursion. Amidst the chaos of ensuing Autons, Cybermen and the odd Judoon platoon upon the moon, it's sometimes easy to forget that there's actually people inside these costumes. Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you, but none of the aliens featured in Doctor Who are real. Like, at all. You can convince yourself that every statue is secretly a Weeping Angel poised to zap you back in time as soon as your back is turned, but it just ain't true. What is true, however, is that these formidable forces don't just grow over night. The costumes and prosthetics are painstakingly designed and then painstakingly worn by the performers who are usually assigned their own crew member to keep them hydrated and cooled down owing to the fact that spending your day dressed as a creature from Raxacoricofallapatorius is apparently like living in a sauna.
