10 Doctor Who Actors You Won't Recognise Out Of Costume

10. Neve McIntosh

Neve McIntosh first guest starred in Doctor Who during the 2010 two-parter The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood as Silurian Alaya and her twin sister Restac but she's since been setting tongues wagging (and in more ways than one) as Madama Vastra, intrepid leader of the ever faithful 'Paternoster Gang'. As a detective, Vastra (alongside her faithful maid and wife, Jenny Flint, and the loveable potato headed ninnymuggins that is Commander Strax) gets up to all to all kinds of shenanigans - *ahem* - in Victorian London and she's always on hand to aid the Doctor whenever their timelines should collide. Which is basically every series. After Vastra's initial appearance in the mid Series 6 finale, A Good Man Goes to War, she has since returned five times and her most recent comeback in last year's series premiere, Deep Breath, proved to be particularly controversial when she participated in an on screen kiss with Jenny Flint. OK, so it was actually an "oxygen transfer", but the world just wasn't ready for the image of a lizard/human snogfest, apparently, because the BBC received a grand total of six complaints which is hardly a revolution and the short but sweet (very sweet, if you like that sort of thing!) scene was subsequently cut from several international broadcasts. If the kiss (sorry - oxygen transfer) made you feel uncomfortable, you'd best stay way from the fan fiction. You have been warned.
