10 Doctor Who Background Events You Might Have Missed

6. Video Hides The Radio Star (Closing Time)

From John Cleese to McFly to Alan Sugar, Doctor Who doesn't shy away from celebrity cameos, and in fact, it normally puts them smack-bang in full view of the camera, making them easy for the audience to spot.

In Series 6's Closing Time however, a different approach was taken, with a certain celebrity being given a brief background moment, rather than an obvious cameo.

When the Eleventh Doctor sends temporary companion Craig Owens to do some investigating, Craig - ever the goofball - completely botches the job, alarming the store attendant with his odd remarks about "ladieswear".

Said attendant then calls over George the security guard to give Craig a telling off, and in the background, an unnamed extra stops what he's doing and looks up, with a completely confused expression on his face.

This extra is none other than BBC Radio 1 host Greg James, who's clearly making the most of his limited screen time by absolutely acting his socks off. For those who are familiar with him, it makes this whole moment even more amusing.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
