10 Doctor Who Background Events You Might Have Missed

5. Missy's Mockery (World Enough And Time)

Even though many Who fans had John Simm's return spoiled for them, the cliffhanger of Series 10's World Enough And Time was a pure stunner.

Bill dead (and Cyber-converted), two Masters, and the Doctor feeling lost and helpless: it was a juicy setup for the following week, and thankfully, The Doctor Falls ultimately delivered the goods.

Back to that cliffhanger though, and in the final seconds of the episode, Simm's Master joins forces with Michelle Gomez's Missy, and the pair taunt the Doctor about the genesis of the Cybermen, as well as Bill's conversion.

Here, Cyber-Bill lets out an anguished cry of "I waited for you" towards the Doctor, and at the exact same time, Missy proceeds to relish in Bill's terror, letting out a blink-and-you'll-miss-it mocking gasp just before the camera cuts away.

It's not exactly in the background, but it is easily missable considering most viewers will have their eyes on Cyber-Bill. Plus, the lighting is dark and the editing is incredibly tight, with Gomez's reaction being cut off after just a few frames.

There's zero doubt that Gomez totally nailed her portrayal of Missy, and little moments like this make it abundantly clear she was perfect for the role.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
