To the Death is the finale to the Eighth Doctor's adventures with Lucie Miller, and where to start with the shockers in this one. The stage is set for an epic conclusion, with a second Dalek Invasion of Earth taking place, and opens after the previous first part of the story, titled Lucie Miller, with the Doctor believed to be dead.
The story features such a cast of characters. On top of the Doctor and Lucie, the story features his granddaughter Susan, great-grandson Alex, former companion Tamsin, all facing the might of the Meddling Monk and the Daleks led by the Dalek Time Controller.
For a Doctor Who story, To the Death feels really gritty, and is probably one of the highest staked adventures the company has produced, packed with action, depth and emotion. The story also arguably makes the Daleks one of the biggest threats they've been in the show, when they lead to three main character deaths.
The first two deaths of the story come in the form of the extermination of Tamsin and Alex, both of which seriously hit the Doctor and co hard. However, the main casualty of the story, and arguably one of Big Finish's biggest moments, is the death of Lucie Miller.
Alex's death came about as he tries sabotaging a magnetrap which is holding a Dalek saucer containing a doomsday weapon, which the story's heroes intend to use to stop the Dalek's plan. His extermination damaged the magnetrap's controls freeing it, allowing Lucie to escape to the saucer and pilot it into the Dalek's time wrap engine. Lucie's actions in the end are successful, killing off one of Big Finish's most loved characters.
Not only is this death, and the rest of the story, such a shocker to the audience, but it massively impacts the character of the Eighth Doctor, with him utterly broken by the time the closing theme plays.
And thats the list of ten of Big Finish's most shocking moments, are there any we've missed?
