10 Doctor Who Characters That Should Return

7. Luke Smith

Eighth Doctor
BBC

Although not strictly a Doctor Who character, Luke Smith has still made a massive impact on the show through his relationship to beloved ex-companion Sarah Jane Smith. Luke Smith made his debut back in 2007 during the premiere episode (Invasion of the Bane) of the newly established spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, were he eventually became Sarah Jane's adoptive son after being rescued by his creators, the Bane.

He would then make his way onto Doctor Who during the Series 4 finale, The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, were each of Russell T Davies' Whoniverse properties crossed over, before making one more small cameo during The End of Time. Luke remained on the spin-off as a regular until the Series 4 opener, The Nightmare Man, were he went off to college, returning then for sporadic appearances.

Sadly after the tragic death of Elisabeth Sladen, the spin-off show was put to rest and Luke Smith remained absent ever since. Of course, with Doctor Who Lockdown produced the beautiful epilogue story, Farewell, Sarah Jane, we now know a little bit more of what Luke has gotten up to since The Man Who Never Was, as well as the fact that Sarah Jane has passed away in canon (or maybe not, depending how you interpret the story).

Either way, now seems like a good time to bring Luke back in order to pay homage to Sarah Jane's legacy, and allowing further closure for the iconic character through her son's appearance, and perhaps him following in her footsteps and becoming The Doctor's companion. Heck, him just being a recurring character on Doctor Who would be a lovely way to pay tribute to our beloved Sarah Jane Smith.
