6. Rory Williams
Rory Williams was nothing more than a bumbling fool when he was first introduced alongside Amy Pond in Series 5's The Eleventh Hour but he soon transformed into a beloved hero who many fans ended up rating even higher than his show-stealing other half. The fact he was always dying helped a bit. Doctor Who became a game of "When will he die next!?" when he started popping his clogs in practically every episode and there wasn't a dry eye in the house when he vowed to stand as his fiancée's protector for 2,000 years in the Series 5 finale (oh, he was an Auton at this point, by the way, and Amy's body was being revived in the Pandorica after being accidentally shot by him - just to get you up to speed!). It was taking things to the next level as far as romantic gestures are concerned but it was Rory's unequivocal devotion to his beloved - even when she was off galavanting through the universe with another man (who she even tried to
kiss at one point!) - that put him in such good stead with the viewing public. Always the underdog, Rory the Roman grew as a person through his travels with the Doctor but he never forgot where he came from, unlike Amy Pond who couldn't have turned her back on Leadworth quicker if she'd tried. They got their happily ever after in the end, though, making the story of Amy and Rory one of the greatest Doctor Who love stories ever told. Amen to that.
